Barry grew up in Vancouver, BC, and graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He did graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania receiving an MA in Communications.

As a student he worked summers as a prospector in Alaska and northern British Columbia. He was involved in student politics at both schools. In grad school he co-authored a published study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

After graduation from Penn, he immediately began work at Young & Rubicam on Madison Avenue in New York. Notable there was signing Bill Cosby to his first national TV sponsorship for Jell-O Pudding, He also worked at Benton & Bowles NY.

While in New York, he served on the International Board of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was a member at the Yale Club.

He was recruited to join Grey Advertising in Caracas, Venezuela to manage Procter & Gamble, General Foods, Revlon and other clients. He launched the first Kool Air advertising there about a month before the Jonestown tragedy. He also oversaw the launch of Pampers, Canada Dry Ginger Ale and helped grow the agency through new business gains.

After several years, he was transferred to Grey in Toronto. He joined Canadian agency Ronalds-Reynolds, became a shareholder and a Board Director. He helped rapidly grow the company leading the gains of new accounts. The agency was purchased by FCB-Publicis and was the largest agency in Canada.

He started his own agency, branded Calexis. Calexis worked with clients in the US, Canada, and Australia including Subway, Chubb Insurance, Molson, Sunoco, and others in sports, events, retail, energy, and food service. Calexis was the first agency in Canada on the Internet in 1994.

Barry has authored many industry articles, lectured at several universities, and given keynote speeches. He has served on industry boards, committees, and panels. He was one of the authors of the Canadian Broadcasting Code for Advertising to Children, including revisions.
